Suqian Times Energy Storage won an award in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's Energy Electronics Innovation Competition, and its flow battery frequency modulation technology was recognized by the industry

Recently, the "Third Energy Electronics Industry Innovation Competition - Special Topic Competition on Thermal Storage Frequency Modulation Technology", hosted by the Industrial Development Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and co-organized by Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as "Xi'an Thermal Power Institute") and the National Key Laboratory for High-Efficiency and Flexible Coal-Fired Power and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage, came to a successful conclusion in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. Suqian Times Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. (abbreviated as "Suqian Times Energy Storage") stood out with its "Water-Based Organic Flow Battery Frequency Modulation System for Fujian Luoyuan Power Plant" and successfully won the third prize of the competition, demonstrating the company's technical strength and innovative breakthroughs in the field of thermal storage frequency modulation.

At the opening ceremony, Zhao Yong, Vice President of Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute, took the lead in delivering a welcome speech, detailing the institute's research layout and engineering practice achievements in the field of energy storage and frequency modulation, thus establishing a good platform for professional exchanges for the competition. Zhang Zhaohua, Director of the Industrial Development Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, emphasized in his speech that thermal storage and frequency modulation is a key means to enhance the regulation capability of the power system and ensure the consumption of new energy. This competition serves as an important carrier for promoting technological breakthroughs, achievements transformation, and industrial ecosystem construction. Jiao Jiayang, Deputy Director of the Achievements Office of the Science and Technology Department of Huaneng Group, added from the perspective of an energy group that promoting the development of thermal storage and frequency modulation technology towards large-scale and economical directions is of profound significance for enhancing the flexibility of traditional power sources and ensuring the safe and stable operation of the power grid.

The "Demonstration Project of Combined Frequency Modulation for Water-based Organic Redox Flow Battery and Thermal Storage at Fujian Luoyuan Power Plant" won by Suqian Times Energy Storage this time was officially completed and put into operation in December 2024. It is not only an outstanding achievement in this competition, but also the first domestic project that couples redox flow battery energy storage with thermal power AGC frequency modulation. This project innovatively integrates water-based organic redox flow batteries with thermal power units to collaboratively respond to the overall grid frequency modulation needs, effectively enhancing the frequency modulation performance and regulation efficiency of the units. It provides a new paradigm for the integrated application of traditional thermal power and new energy storage.

To achieve this technological breakthrough, the project team focused on the in-depth research of AGC frequency modulation technology for thermal power units assisted by aqueous organic flow battery energy storage. They systematically tested the key performance parameters of frequency modulation flow batteries, specifically designed a collaborative frequency modulation control strategy for flow batteries and units, and ultimately formed a mature and reliable coupling control scheme. Relying on the thermal-storage joint frequency modulation system of Huaneng Luoyuan Power Plant, the project completed comprehensive on-site verification. The actual operating data fully demonstrated that the AGC frequency modulation effect of aqueous organic flow battery energy storage assisted thermal power units was significant. This not only firmly verified the feasibility of this technological route but also provided valuable theoretical support and practical experience for technological innovation in the field of thermal-storage frequency modulation, laying a solid foundation for subsequent large-scale promotion and application.

This award not only represents the industry's high recognition of Suqian Times' innovation capability in energy storage technology, but also confirms the broad application prospects of flow battery technology in the field of thermal storage frequency modulation.
